WHAT DID I MISS? — info for singers who were absent on Nov. 5

To understand some of the information below, you need to know:
+ “divisi” = how the voice parts in a song are divided
+ SAB divisi = Soprano, Alto, and Baritone
+ SSAB divisi = Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto, and Baritone
+ SATB divisi = Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass
+ SSAA divisi = Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto 1, and Alto 2

“Why We Sing” - SATB divisi! — Every year, we sing just measures 72-end of this song to close out each of our concerts. In rehearsal on Nov. 5, we learned this whole excerpt. If you missed Nov. 5, make sure you learn and memorize this excerpt by Nov. 19. We will perform this song with Senior Honors Choir in the concert that day. The rehearsal tracks for this song are cut down to just the measures we sing. Because the tenor part is fairly high in this song, some of our altos will sing it. On Oct. 22, we already split our group into 4 voice parts for the song “Together,” so we’ll just use those same 4 groups for this song. (Check your Part Sheet if you forget what you were assigned.) Here is what track you should use to practice “Why We Sing”:
+ SOPRANO track — people who sing Soprano 1 in “Together”
+ ALTO track — people who sing Soprano 2 in “Together”
+ TENOR track — people who sing Alto in “Together”
+ BASS track — people who sing Baritone in “Together”
If you are confused about which part to learn, EMAIL MS. RACHEL right away at JHCconductor@theYCHC.org.

“Hold Fast to Dreams” — On Nov. 5, the choir was able to sing this whole song well from memory. Review and memorize it by Nov. 19. We will perform this song in the concert that day.

“Dreams of the Dreamer” - switches between SAB & SSAB divisi! — Singers received sheet music for this song on Nov. 5. If possible, contact Bill Lytle at ExecutiveDirector@theYCHC.org to schedule a time to stop by the church and pick up your copy. Even if you can’t come pick up the sheet music, you should still start learning your part using the rehearsal tracks on the website. About half of this song is SAB and half is SSAB. You already know what voice part you sing for all of our songs that are SAB. You also already know what voice part you sing in SSAB because that’s the divisi we use for “Together.” Because “Dreams of the Dreamer” switches back and forth between SAB and SSAB divisi, rehearsal tracks have been created to match your individual path through the song. Here is which track you should use:
+ TREBLE 1 track — people who sing Soprano in SAB and Soprano 1 in SSAB
+ TREBLE 2 track — people who sing Soprano in SAB and Soprano 2 in SSAB
+ TREBLE 3 track — people who sing Alto in SAB and Soprano 2 in SSAB
+ TREBLE 4 track — people who sing Alto in SAB and Alto in SSAB
+ BARITONE track — people who sing Baritone in SAB and SSAB
If you are confused about which part to learn, EMAIL MS. RACHEL right away.

SOPRANOS/ALTOS ONLY: “And I Can Sing” - SSAA divisi! — On Nov. 5, we gave treble singers (sopranos and altos) the sheet music for this song, and we split the treble singers into four-part harmony. If you were absent, DO NOT start working on this song. We will assign you a voice part on Nov. 19.

“Defying Gravity,” “Hine Ma Tov,” “Inveniam,” and “Together” — On Nov. 5, we also rehearsed these songs. To know what excerpts we covered, see the “What to Practice” section above. Anything marked as “Review” is music we rehearsed on Nov. 5. Please review those excerpts and know them well for our Nov. 19 rehearsal. Of course, also learn anything marked as “NEW.”

Choir T-Shirt — On Nov. 5, singers received their choir t-shirt. We will wear our shirts for the Nov. 19 concert and for all future rehearsals. If you missed Nov. 5, you’ll receive your t-shirt on Nov. 19. Arrive several minutes early so you have time to change.

Solo Possibilities

“Defying Gravity” — We will definitely use a soloist for measures 1-21 of “Defying Gravity.” People interested in this solo will audition during a rehearsal in January.

“Together” (maybe) — If possible, we will add a soloist in “Together.” This would need to be a singer who is experienced singing styles of music in which soloists improvise vocal runs (such as in gospel, R&B, etc.). If we do not have anyone who can do this, we will not add a soloist. If you are someone familiar with this style of singing, click here and listen to timestamps 2:04-2:36 to practice some options. People interested in singing a solo like this will audition during a rehearsal in January.
